Topic: Question and correction practice with have and can
Today we continue our beginner correction practice. In this lesson, we review a little from previous lessons and add two very useful ideas:
- have / have got for possession or time
- can for ability
Quick review from earlier lessons:
- Use short, clear answers.
- Keep the verb form simple.
- Match the question with the answer.
5 useful words:
1) have = possess
Reading: hav
Example: I have a small room.
Usage note: Use have for things you possess.
2) can = be able to
Reading: kan
Example: I can answer now.
Usage note: Use can before the base verb.
3) need = want/require
Reading: need
Example: I need a short answer.
Usage note: Use need when something is necessary.
4) room = space
Reading: room
Example: There is room for one more person.
Usage note: Room can mean space, not only a house room.
5) answer = response
Reading: an-ser
Example: Please answer the question.
Usage note: Answer can be a noun or a verb.
5 example sentences:
1) Have you got time?
Reading: hav yoo got taym
Meaning: Do you have time?
Usage note: British English often uses have got.
2) I can answer now.
