# French A1 Q&A Corrections #006
## Topic: Simple object questions and corrections
### Lesson overview
In this forum thread, we practice very small French questions and corrections about objects. This lesson continues the A1 question-and-correction series with a new step: identifying things and asking where they are.
We will review a little from previous lessons:
- **est-ce que** helps make a question.
- **pouvez** was used for polite requests.
- **famille** words and short replies helped us answer simply.
- **matin / soir / tôt / tard / heure** helped us talk about time.
Now we focus on:
- **c’est**
- **où**
- **qu’est-ce que**
- naming objects like **une gomme** and **le cahier**
### 5 useful words
1. **c’est** — reading: **seh** — meaning: it is / this is
- Use it to identify something.
- Example: **C’est une gomme.**
2. **où** — reading: **oo** — meaning: where
- Use it to ask about place.
- Example: **Où est le cahier ?**
3. **qu’est-ce que** — reading: **kes-kuh** — meaning: what
- Use it in a very common beginner question.
- Example: **Qu’est-ce que c’est ?**
4. **une gomme** — reading: **ewn gom** — meaning: an eraser
- Use it for a classroom object.
- Example: **C’est une gomme.**
5. **le cahier** — reading: **luh ka-yay** — meaning: the notebook
- Use it when talking about a notebook.
- Example: **Le cahier est ici.**
### 5 example sentences
1. **Qu’est-ce que c’est ?**
- Reading: **kes-kuh seh**
- Translation: What is it?
- Use this when you want to identify an object.
2. **C’est une gomme.**
- Reading: **seh ewn gom**
- Translation: It is an eraser.
- Use this for a short identification answer.
3. **Où est le cahier ?**
- Reading: **oo eh luh ka-yay**
- Translation: Where is the notebook?
- Use this to ask about location.
4. **Le cahier est ici.**
- Reading: **luh ka-yay eh ee-see**
- Translation: The notebook is here.
- Use this to give a simple location answer.
5. **C’est le stylo ?**
- Reading: **seh luh stee-lo**
- Translation: Is it the pen?
- Use this to check if something is a certain object.
### Usage notes
- **Qu’est-ce que c’est ?** is a very common beginner question. It is neutral and useful in many situations.
- **C’est + noun** is the easiest way to answer: **C’est une gomme.**
- **Où** asks about place: **Où est le cahier ?**
- In French, a question mark is used in writing, but the sentence order often stays simple.
### Common beginner mistakes
- Do not forget **c’est** in short answers.
- Correct: **C’est une gomme.**
- Not: **Une gomme.** in a full answer
- Do not use **où** when you mean “what.”
- **où** = where
- **qu’est-ce que** = what
- Keep the article with the noun when needed:
- **une gomme**
- **le cahier**

1. What is it?
2. Where is the notebook?
