Today’s focus is short replies and one new question word: why. We will also review two ideas from earlier lessons:
- yes / no for simple replies
- do / does in short, clear sentences
Words for today:
1) yes — reading: yes — affirmative reply
2) no — reading: noh — negative reply
3) do — reading: doo — make or perform
4) does — reading: duhz — third-person present verb
5) why — reading: wye — reason question
Example sentences:
1) Yes, I do. — reading: yes, ay doo
2) No, I do not. — reading: noh, ay do not
3) She does her work. — reading: she duhz her werk
4) Why is he late? — reading: wye iz he layt
5) I do my work. — reading: ay do my werk
Usage notes:
- Use yes for a positive reply.
- Use no for a negative reply.
- Use do with I, you, we, they.
- Use does with he, she, it.
- Use why to ask for a reason.
Mini practice:
1) Reply to: Do you study?
2) Change: I do my work. -> She ___ her work.
3) Make a why question with he + late.
