Topic: Question and correction practice for simple present-time forms
Lesson overview:
Today we practice common beginner mistakes in short questions and answers. The main grammar idea is simple present with questions and short statements. We also review a little from the last lessons: use near for close distance, use here and there for location ideas, and use go / come patterns only when movement is part of the sentence.
5 useful words:
1) play — pley — do a game or sport
2) study — stuh-dee — learn with books or practice
3) work — wurk — do a job
4) live — liv — have your home in a place
5) speak — speek — use a language or talk
Word usage notes:
- play is common with games and sports.
- study is for learning, not for simple action.
- work often changes to works with he / she / it.
- live is for home location.
- speak is useful for language questions.
5 example sentences:
1) Do you play chess?
Reading: doo yoo pley chess
Meaning: Satranç oynar mısın? / هل تلعب الشطرنج؟ / Ты играешь в шахматы? / ¿Juegas al ajedrez? / Spielst du Schach? / Tu joues aux échecs ? / Giochi a scacchi?
Note: Use Do you... ? for a simple present question.
2) I study at home.
Reading: ai stuh-dee at hohm
Meaning: Evde ders çalışırım. / أدرس في البيت. / Я учусь дома. / Estudio en casa. / Ich lerne zu Hause. / J’étudie à la maison. / Studio a casa.
Note: This is a simple statement.
3) Does she work on Monday?
Reading: duz shee wurk on mun-dey
Meaning: O pazartesi çalışır mı? / هل تعمل يوم الاثنين؟ / Она работает в понедельник? / ¿Ella trabaja el lunes? / Arbeitet sie am Montag? / Travaille-t-elle lundi ? / Lavora lunedì?
Note: Use Does with he / she / it.
4) We live near the park.
Reading: wee liv neer thuh park
Meaning: Parkın yakınında yaşıyoruz. / نحن نعيش قرب الحديقة. / Мы живём рядом с парком. / Vivimos cerca del parque. / Wir leben in der Nähe des Parks. / Nous vivons près du parc. / Viviamo vicino al parco.
Note: near shows close distance.
5) Can you speak English?
Reading: kan yoo speek ing-glish
Meaning: İngilizce konuşabilir misin? / هل تستطيع التحدث بالإنجليزية؟ / Ты можешь говорить по-английски? / ¿Puedes hablar inglés? / Kannst du Englisch sprechen? / Peux-tu parler anglais ? / Sai parlare inglese?
Note: Can you... ? asks about ability.
