Today’s topic is prepositions of place: in, on, under, next to, behind.
Quick review from the last lessons:
- Present Simple can talk about facts and routines.
- We also learned frequency words like usually and sometimes.
- Now we add place words to say where things are.
Lesson goal:
- Learn 5 common place words.
- Say where things are in very short English sentences.
Words:
1) in — reading: in — meaning: inside
Example: The key is in my bag.
Usage note: Use in for something inside a place or container.
2) on — reading: on — meaning: on top of
Example: The cup is on the table.
Usage note: Use on for something touching a surface.
3) under — reading: un-der — meaning: below
Example: The shoes are under the chair.
Usage note: Use under for something lower than another thing.
4) next to — reading: nekst tu — meaning: beside
Example: My bag is next to the door.
Usage note: Use next to for something very close to another thing.
5) behind — reading: bi-haind — meaning: at the back of
Example: The cat is behind the box.
Usage note: Use behind for something at the back of another thing.
Important grammar:
- Use is with one thing: The phone is on the chair.
- Use are with more than one thing: My keys are in the bag.
Sentences:
1) My keys are in the bag.
Reading: mai kiiz ar in ðə bag.
Meaning: My keys are inside the bag.
2) The phone is on the chair.
Reading: ðə foun iz on ðə cher.
Meaning: The phone is on top of the chair.
3) The ball is under the table.
Reading: ðə bo:l iz un-der ðə tey-bəl.
Meaning: The ball is below the table.
4) The shop is next to the bank.
Reading: ðə shop iz nekst tu ðə bangk.
Meaning: The shop is beside the bank.
5) The dog is behind the door.
Reading: ðə dog iz bi-haind ðə dor.
Meaning: The dog is at the back of the door.
