Hurricane Oscar forms in the Caribbean

Hurricane Oscar formed in the Caribbean on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Miami-South Florida. 

NWS said Oscar is expected to move toward the Turks and Caicos Islands, southeastern Bahamas and northeastern Cuba before it turns northeast. At this time, there is no impact expected in South Florida, according to NWS. 

The Bahamas government issued a hurricane warning for the island’s southeastern parts and for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Cuba’s government issued a hurricane watch for some eastern provinces. 

Oscar is expected to produce a “dangerous storm surge” on the Turks and Caicos Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Heavy rainfall is expected in the southeastern Bahamas and it is expected to spread to eastern Cuba on Sunday, per NHC which added the storm’s sustained winds are clocking up to 80 mph. 

Tropical storm Nadine also formed north of Honduras and will likely be heading westward toward Guatemala, per NHC. The storm made landfall in Belize and its winds were clocked at near 60 mph. Apart from Belize, tropical storm conditions are expected on the Yucatan Peninsula, NHC stated. 

The formation of Oscar and Nadine comes as parts of the U.S. have been hit hard by a pair of hurricanes, Helene and Milton, that devastated communities, destroyed roads, caused power outages, took lives and injured many.
