Former President Trump thanked Congress after the Senate advanced legislation Tuesday that would boost his Secret Service protection after two assassination attempts, warning that there are big threats on his life coming from Iran.
“Big Threats on my life by Iran. The entire U.S. Military is watching and waiting," Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. "Moves were already made by Iran that didn’t work out, but they will try again. Not a good situation for anyone."
The Senate approved the bill Tuesday evening, making Trump one step closer to having bolstered security less than two weeks after he was the subject of a second assassination attempt.
The measure was originally proposed by Reps. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) and Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) days after Trump’s first assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. If signed into law, it would require Secret Service to “apply the same standards” to figure out the number of agents protecting the president, vice president and those running for offices granted such protection.
It passed without opposition in the House last week and is now headed to President Biden’s desk.
The extra push came after a second apparent attempt on Trump’s life at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla., earlier this month. During the incident, Secret Service shot at a man who was sticking his rifle through the perimeter of the golf course.
The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, now faces a total of five charges. The indictment, unveiled Tuesday marks a significant escalation in the case and comes after prosecutors revealed that Routh allegedly wrote a letter months beforehand detailing his plans.
It follows the first threat, when a gunman opened fire at his Pennsylvania rally and grazed the GOP nominee's ear with a bullet. The shooter and one rallygoer were killed and two others were injured during the incident.
Trump said in his post that he is surrounded by "more men, guns and security" than he’s ever seen before.
“Thank you to Congress for unanimously approving far more money to Secret Service – Zero “NO” votes, strictly bipartisan. Nice to see Republicans and Democrats get together on something,” he wrote. “An attack on a former President is a Death Wish for the attacker!”
Trump’s post follows a briefing Tuesday where he was told about “real and specific threats” made by Iran to assassinate him. His campaign has also been hacked by Iran, as the country looks to retaliate over the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
The two threats on the former president's life were made by U.S. citizens.
