New York Magazine, Olivia Nuzzi part ways

New York Magazine and a top reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, have parted ways after it was made public she was involved in an inappropriate relationship with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The magazine said it had enlisted the help of the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine to review Nuzzi’s work. Lawyers found the same conclusion as the outlet’s initial internal review: Nuzzi, the magazine’s Washington reporter, did not publish inaccurate information or show evidence of bias in her work.

“Nevertheless, the magazine and Nuzzi agreed that the best course forward is to part ways. Nuzzi is a uniquely talented writer and we have been proud to publish her work for nearly eight years as our Washington Correspondent,” the magazine wrote. “We wish her the best.”

The magazine said last month that Nuzzi told editors she engaged in a personal relationship while reporting on the campaign, which was a violation of the company’s standards “around conflicts of interest and disclosures.”

Media critic Oliver Darcy first reported that the former candidate was Kennedy, who since has dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed former President Trump.

Nuzzi was placed on leave while an internal review of her work was conducted. The magazine said if it had known about the relationship, Nuzzi would not have “continued to cover the presidential campaign.”

The reporter confirmed to the New York Times that earlier in 2024, “some communication between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal.”

She said the relationship never turned physical, and she did not directly report on “the subject or use them as a source.”

Still, Nuzzi said she regretted her actions and apologized to her colleagues at New York Magazine.
