California to see unusual October heat wave with record-setting temperatures

California is set to see an unusual October heat wave with a chance of record-setting temperatures in the coming days, the National Weather Service (NWS) said Wednesday.

“Record-breaking heat will continue across portions of the Southwest this week, the NWS’s Weather Prediction Center said in a post on the social platform X. “Moderate to major heat impacts are possible in areas near San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles."

The Weather Prediction Center also said related “areas will experience major to extreme heat impacts over the next few days as 90-110F temperatures develop each afternoon, threatening record high temperatures.”

On Wednesday, large portions of California stretching from the Bay Area down to the U.S.-Mexico border, were under Excessive Heat Warnings. 

In a blog post on their website, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) said Wednesday they are “working in partnership with state agencies to promote heat safety and resources to help residents stay safe.”

“California has seen some of the hottest temperatures on record in our state, and the high temperatures are continuing into October,” Amy Palmer, a Cal OES spokesperson, said in the post. “It’s important for Californians to continue taking action to protect themselves, including checking in on friends and neighbors, who can be vulnerable to heat when they are alone.”
