Biden postpones trip to Germany, Angola for Hurricane Milton

President Biden postponed his trip to Germany and Angola this week with Hurricane Milton approaching Florida, the White House announced on Tuesday.

“Given the projected trajectory and strength of Hurricane Milton, President Biden is postponing his upcoming trip to Germany and Angola in order to oversee preparations for and the response to Hurricane Milton, in addition to the ongoing response to the impacts of Hurricane Helene across the Southeast,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

The president was set to leave for Berlin on Thursday and was expected to be out on his international trip until Oct. 15. On the trip, he was going to meet with German leaders and focus on their support for Ukraine amid its war effort.

He was then scheduled to travel to Luanda, Angola on Oct. 13 to meet with President João Lourenço.

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida Wednesday night as a Category 3 hurricane by the time it reaches shore, with winds of 111-129 mph, The Associated Press reported.

It is expected to be the first major hurricane to directly hit the Tampa area in more than a century. The storm intensified quickly over the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Monday, with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph, making it a Category 5 storm.

Biden has been working on the federal response to Hurricane Helene, which hit several states including North Carolina and Georgia.

The president on Tuesday morning received a briefing on the federal government’s response to Hurricane Helene and the preparations for Hurricane Milton and is set to make remarks on both hurricanes.
